In Pátzcuaro, an ancient town in the mountains of Michoacan, a down-on-his-luck director creates an immitation Las Vegas as the scene of a pornographic movie. His star is Dominique, from The Ethiopian Exhibition, now a heroin addict and prostitute. She sits on her throne, compulsively crossing and recrossing her nylon-sleek legs. She strolls through the mercado, past crouching Purepecha Indians. She descends, naked except for her high heels, into the casino. Everywhere and always the camera is hissing, like a malevolent beast...

   The Queen of Las Vegas, like the presumptive movie, was created in Pátzcuaro. It was the third of my Mexican novels, and published as a part of Mexico Trilogy. It includes characters from The Ethiopian Exhibition and Maya, and continues their thematic exploration of entwining realities...
