Masques: Chapter Two of HAG

 

The Hag, played by Stephanie, a young American woman, is masked and unmasked: but revelation remains hidden. Her scarlet hair, let loose, spills over her shoulders. She flashes her legs, in silk stockings, throws back her head, and laughs. The author, frustrated, angry, despairing, begins his journey south, into Mexico.

"I begin to write"—I wrote, in the Excelsior Cafe in Aguascalientes, Mexico—"but I have nothing to say." The Hag still eluded me. I returned to California and shot another series of videos with Stephanie. The Hag--the Muse--was a masked woman, I realized. How she behaved depended on which mask she wore. I had a group of masks I had made, grotesque faces. Stephanie tried them on....
