Savages: Chapter Five of HAG

 

The author, in the jungles of southern Mexico, broods over his muse, the HAG: a brutal woman clothed in silken finery, a caged savage, a window into a mysteriously erotic world... ....

I remained in Mexico. At night, in my small room in the Mina Hotel, I edited the video I shot. In the morning, I would walk to the Excelsior Cafe and write scripts for the video. Another artist friend, Oscar Rangel, lent me his studio. Brenda and Laura, like two wraiths, appeared in windows and doorways. You are savages, I told them, imagine yourself as savages, painted and feathered, emerging from your jungle lair to briefly expose yourselves to your admiring audience. In the Excelsior Cafe, over a steaming cup of cafe americano, I wrote in my notebook these lines: "Savagery is the nature of women...they paint their faces, they wear barbaric ornaments, their bodies are veiled...."
