Cathexis: Chapter Seven of HAG

The artist follows his muse: he sees her everywhere, half-hidden in rooms, climbing stairs, tearing at her stockings in the jungle...alluring, aloof, alone...

I returned to California. A few years earlier I had met a young woman who was interested in modeling. Her dream was to be a goddess, she said. We had taken some photos. One evening, as I showed her prints, I mentioned I was going to a party. She asked if she could come too. Sure, I said, as long as you come as a goddess. She put on the usual—dark makeup, high heels and stockings. I made a veil for her face. I draped her with a bit of translucent cloth.. Dressed like that she got on the back of my motorcycle—I was a poor artist, I had no car—and we went to the party. During the party she said not a word to anyone. She sat, crossed her legs, strolled about, her translucent gown trailing behind her.

I remembered this evening while I was trying to re-start my novel. I decided to incorporate her as the Hag: another young girl playing the role of an older woman playing at being the Hag. I wrote a couple more chapters. Inexplicably the work again stopped. In frustration I returned to Mexico—Aguascalientes, the Excelsior Cafe, the Hotel Mina. Oscar Rangel introduced me to Venecia, his young artistic friend. I took out my camera and we went to work. Another chapter of the movie appeared: Venecia climbing the metal stairs at the Mina, crawling around—thanks to the magic of video editing—in a room at the Palacio del Gobierno, tearing at her stockings in the Jardin San Marcos....
