HAG: The Opening

The Hag begins with Jacqueline on her cross....

The Hag actually began life as a novel: "I have imagined," I wrote, "a woman against the wall, nailed to a cross. I call her the Hag. We have entered into a discussion, she and I, not a debate, we do not contend...." This discussion was meant to be the book, a kind of dialog between author and muse. It quickly bogged down, however. I was living again in California, in the garage of the house that my father had built and in which I'd grown up. I began taking photographs of the Hag, using as models various local women and my old Nikon F and F2 cameras. I developed and printed the pictures in my own darkroom, in an adobe structure I had built in my backyard. I tried to evoke the Hag in these photos. I found the images intriguing, but the novel still refused to be written. At this time digital photography was just beginning. I decided to try this new form of photography, and bought an Olympus camera that did 48 seconds of QuickTime video. If I couldnt write the novel, I thought, perhaps I could turn the discussion into a movie. I began with an acting student at the local college. She starred in the first three segments of the movie. You can see her in the videos which follow this. I then went to Mexico, where I had been writing my novels for some years, and miraculously more of the novel appeared. A couple years later, with most of the novel written and the video taken, I met Jacqueline. She returned to California with me, and here, at last, I shot the opening of the film. Thus the beginning of the movie took place at its very end....
